How to make macro wait for arguments before evaluating

The macro \frac, for example, expands immediately after pressing Enter while \author-email-note waits for the arguments before evaluating,

Or one can press Enter twice to expand it.

My own macro works like \frac. This can be very handy, but sometimes the second behavior is preferred because the arguments can be entered faster. How do I set the behavior to one of the two?

I tried to put my macro in inactive* but it didn’t work.

I guess should be specified with drd-props maybe you find some examples in the code.
