How to navigate a long document?

What’s a good way to handle navigation in a long document, with parts/sections/chapters?

A small clickable ToC on the side? Splitting the parts in different documents? Shortcuts, tag, collapse?

The following helps, though I don’t feel it does enough: Ctrl+PgUp and Ctrl+PgDown go to the next or previous tag which is “similar” to the one selected. So, if you select a Section and press those, you can navigate.

In the focus bar you see the title of the current section, if you click it you will get a popup with all the relevant tags and clicking them you are taken to the correct point in the document.

Inserting a table of content at the beginning or the ending of the document would be helpful.

And I have planed to improve the focus section menu:
