I’m not sure it’s a bug or a feature: * will not insert a space to the right of math-up, math-ss, etc. (but it will on the left). Sometimes I can avoid it by using up-... instead, but sometimes there is no way around.
Inconsistent behavior of `math-up`, etc.?
I don’t know if it is a bug, if none of the developer answers it may be worth submitting as a bug in Savannah.
This said, a workaround may be adding a vertical phantom on the right of the symbols
(I tested it in this case only).
