Keeping consecutive letters for variables italic (as in `a_ij`)

When typing math terms like a_ij containing more than two consecutive letters, TeXmacs automatically combines the letters to a non-italic word.

Is there a way to prevent this, in order to keep the variables italic?

Inserting a space between the variables would, for example, do this, but I would favour a solution without space between the variables.

Pls type comma tab tab between letters. I have got a feeling that I read it somewhere but I cannot find it. The bottom right of the editor says you have a (nocomma) after this key combination.
