Spreadsheet cell does not have a reference

I have a simple frequency table, that I created via Insert -> Table -> Numeric spreadsheet. I then set the Size by marking the cell (it gets a purple semi transparent background color) and then right-click and select Size -> Set number of rows... and repeat the operation with Set number of columns...

But if I do the same inside a Big table, which get the nice Table N. description, some or all of the cells are now Numeric dot table and I can not reference the cell or evaluate the cell with Maxima.

My work-around is to create an extra column and then delete it. For some reason, the entire table is now a Numeric spreadsheet.

I this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

This looks like a bug to me. Another workaround is to use structured insert to add rows and columns (Meta+Right and Meta+down).

Thanks @jeroen. I’m not able to do Meta+Right or Meta+down. I’m on a mac, so it might be my key bindings but I’m unaware of how to remedy that - a quick search gave me some instructions for iTerm2.

On many platforms Meta shortcuts are reserved for other purposes. You can alternatively do Esc Right (first pressing and releasing Esc, then press Right). More details can be found in the Jolly Writer Sec. 2.3.5:

“Ctrl+Left” and “Ctrl+Right” are intercepted by the OS on the Mac. You can disable this going in “System Settings…”. On my Mac they are assigned to “Mission Control” to move left/right in spaces, just disable these shortcuts so that you can use them in TeXmacs.
